Nottingham Uni get an LDO (Lacrosse Development Officer) for the 2011-12 season

Nottingham University have secured the services of an American coach to work with the Universities 4 lacrosse teams for the 2011-12 season. Harrison Rogers of Great Falls, New York will be arriving in the UK Late August and will take elite training sessions and coach for the University on game days. Harrison will also be involved with the city team on saturdays.

The addition of a full time coach will raise the standard of University lacrosse in Nottingham giving players access to the wealth of experience Harrison will bring.

Club History

The first recorded playing of lacrosse in Nottingham was when the Iroquois Indians and Canadian Champion Lacrosse players visited Nottingham whilst on a tour of the country, and played an exhibition game at Trent Bridge in the summer of 1883. The locals were so taken with what they saw that two local teams were formed for that season, the Nottingham Club and Radcliffe-on-Trent. The results of their matches were reported in the Nottingham Evening Post for the seasons 1883-4 and 1884-5. Unfortunately, their games were only reported upon for those two seasons and it is difficult to determine when those two sides stopped playing. There was also a team playing at Derby, and a local enthusiast, Mr Worthington Church, offered a challenge cup for competition between clubs within a radius of fifty miles of Nottingham. Where is that trophy now?

The first Nottingham men's team of the modern era was formed by Nottingham University students in 1965, joining Division 6 of the North of England Men's Lacrosse Association. It consisted wholly of ex-pupils of the then lacrosse playing Manchester grammar schools. The first team climbed steadily through the divisions, gaining promotion to Division 2 in 1995 and to the Premier Division in 1998. In that same year they won the Daily Telegraph Junior Flags Trophy. The side remained in the Premiership for a couple of seasons, but as its more experienced players returned home from university the first & A teams amalgamated into a division 4 side. This rapidly gained promotion to division 2 where they play today.

The club changed its name from Nottingham University LC to Nottingham LC in 2000 when only one player was a current student. Since that time the number of students playing has increased again and we now include students from Nottingham, Trent & Loughborough Universities.

Over the years a number of current or ex-Nottingham players have represented their country; Rob Nichols, Ed Buckley, Matt Beadle, Andy Linton, Jamie Shuttleworth, Ben McAllister & Wil Stelfox have all played in England colours. The current co-captain Max Sandy captained England at last years U19 World Championships.Overseas players have included Jo Ondracek (Czech Republic) and Martin Davidson (Sweden).
